Mneemo! App Review and Giveaway!

I was contacted by the developer of a new app called Mneemo by Pedro Rico! It looks like an exciting and fun app to use, so I agreed to write a review AND host a giveaway!

Introducing: Mneemo!

This app is a customizable memory matching/concentration game. You can use the four pre-set choices to play with (animals, letters, numbers, and shapes), or you can create your own categories!

I selected animals because many of my little Pre-K students love all things animals!

Once you select the play, you can choose the difficulty of the game.

Obviously you should increase the difficulty once you can see that your student(s) are succeeding with the easiest levels. It would probably take a Pre-K student a while (and not to mention that they may get frustrated) if you start off with matching 12 pairs.

Therefore, for this demonstration, I selected 6 pairs.

As you can see, the app includes REAL pictures (not clip art images). This is fabulous. Most of my students love real life images of animals. You would continue to flip pictures until you find a pair that matches. Once you find a pair that matches, the score card on the left hand side of the app increases and the matched pair disappear.

The great part about this app is that it is completely customizable! You can upload your own pictures and create groupings. Just select the little "settings" button on the bottom right hand side of the main menu.

Add an image by selecting the + icon.

It's pretty easy to add numerous pictures at one time! You should have these images already on your camera roll on your iPad.

Once you have the pictures you want, you can select an individual picture to categorize it.

You can see that I typed "Initial K" below the image of can. This will then create an Initial K category to play with. In this screen you can also choose to rotate an image or delete it by using the buttons above.

Take a look! Here are my Initial K images!

NOTE: Before playing, you must have AT LEAST four images in a category. I got really stuck on this part when I tried to play the game with three images before realizing that the options are four pairs and above.

Once you have your images, play the game!

Cool, huh? I think my preschoolers will love this!

You can use this app for any goal, really! Use it to follow directions, say specific articulation sounds, or label objects/actions.

Areas of improvement:

As with almost any good app, there are areas that can always be improved.
  • In future developments, I would love to see it take some form of data. I know it's meant to be a fun game, but if you're using it to target specific goals, just a simple +/- would be great.
  • I would also like the images to pause until either you tap the screen again or for a specified amount of time. The images flip kind of fast, so I would like to be able to "pause" so that the student can say the word correctly before moving on.
  • Finally, it would be great if there was a recording aspect to it! Either if the SLP could record the word when uploading an image (that way a student can press the picture when he/she is unsure of an object) or if the student can record the word when playing.
Overall, this is a fabulous app. I love that you can customize it with specific pictures to create your own categories. I think my students will love it. I would highly recommend this app to everyone!

Mneemo! is available at the iTunes store for only $0.99! Download it here: Mneemo!
